Welcome

Welcome to Dave Garrow’s web page. This was the idea and initiative of my wife (www.darleenopfer.com), and I was rather slow to appreciate the possible value and utility of putting all of my past non-book publications up on the web at one comprehensive site.
Once I finally forced myself to undertake the fairly draining work of gathering full-text copies of all my various articles and reviews, converting them to PDFs (if they weren’t already), and attaching all the appropriate links, however, I came to realize—perhaps more tardily than most people—that web-posting was a better endeavor than simply collecting hard copies and ‘tear sheets’ in numerous file drawers.
In recent years hardly a month has gone by without some student or colleague from various places around the globe asking me for a copy of something I’d written years ago that they weren’t immediately able to put their hands on. Sometimes I’ve been able to send a PDF attachment, but on other occasions I’ve been reduced to using good old-fashioned snail mail.
So this is the solution. We’ve organized all of my past publications, from 1978 to the present, in two comprehensive menus: one chronological, by year of publication, and the other topical, with straightforward subject categories organized in reverse chronological order. In June 2010 I finally scanned in several dozen remaining book chapters and biographical dictionary entries written in years past, so that now this site is 100% complete, excluding only items that have been directly reprinted from one or another of my books. From 2010 through early 2017 I was 99% focused upon a huge book project, and so there were fewer review essays and law review articles than in previous years, but in May 2017 HarperCollins published Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama, which I began work on back in early 2008.
Needless to say, this wouldn’t have happened at all without Darleen’s initiative and technical skills. I also owe great thanks to Dennis Hutchinson, Charles Kaiser, Mark Feeney, Ernie Suggs, and Carlin Romano for helping me track down the full-texts of some items that were otherwise not readily available, and to Stuart Marcelle and Barrie Smith for help with scanning.
So please browse and enjoy. Don’t hesitate to tell me–david dot garrow @ cantab dot net–if there’s something you believe can be improved!
                                           Sincerely,
                                           Dave Garrow
